While the science behind Rett Syndrome is complex and the precise function of MECP2 remains unclear, the discovery that MeCP2-deficient olfactory receptor neurons (ORN) have a discernible cellular defect, has provided an innovative opportunity to screen drugs to reverse the deficit.
ORN are the primary cells which detect and identify thousands of different smells. The laboratory of Dr. Stavros Lomvardas, based at the University of California, San Fransisco, will use high-throughput screening to rapidly assess the activity of large numbers of drugs/compounds on the given target area.
