07/09/2011 ANNOUNCEMENT: Rett Syndrome Research Trust Creates MECP2 Consortium
Dear Friends of RSRT/UK,
I first heard the term "MECP2" on a summer evening in 1999. Huda Zoghbi had just identified MECP2 gene mutations as the cause of Rett Syndrome. My then almost 3-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with Rett nine months earlier. I was at the very beginning of my journey to understand the disorder that was to rob my daughter, and my family, of so much. Twelve years have passed and tremendous progress has been made. Rett Syndrome is now viewed as a curable disorder. We fully expect that treatments to improve some of the symptoms of Rett will be forthcoming in the next handful of years. However, if, like me, you love a child with Rett, you are hoping for more than treatments; you are yearning for a cure.
One of the challenges standing in the way of this ambitious goal is the fact we don't fully understand what the MeCP2 protein does. Efforts towards this end have been ongoing in multiple labs around the world since the early 1990's when Prof. Adrian Bird first discovered the protein. But this complex gene is good at keeping secrets and its function has remained elusive.
Therefore, I, along with our Board of Trustees, am pleased to announce the creation of the MECP2 Consortium - a non-traditional collaboration that brings together three elite scientists, former competitors who are now working together toward a single goal. The full press release is below.
