The Northern Times: Family to join in walk initiative

08/10/2019

A fancy dress fun walk is being held in Dornoch to raise money for a charity that supports people with the rare genetic illness Rett Syndrome. Local couple Alvin and Stephanie Wood, whose daughter Emilia (3) was born with the condition, are organising the 5k on October 26.

The family were featured in a previous edition of the Northern Times when they talked about their hopes that a cure can be found for the devastating illness.

Emilia, who has an engaging personality and infectious sense of humour, cannot walk or talk, has limited use of her hands and can only eat soft food.

Walk for Emilia is part of the fourth consecutive global ‘virtual run’ event held by the charity Reverse Rett, set up by affected families to fundraise and raise awareness of the disease.

Supporters of the charity worldwide are encouraged to hold a walk, run or jog in October, which is Rett Syndrome Awareness month.
