Reverse Rett turns 15

20/06/2025

Last week Reverse Rett turned 15 years old!

We have always been a forward thinking charity but sometimes it’s good to take a breath and look back at how far we’ve come.

We started out as parents wanting to raise money for the scientists working in Rett research on the back of the reversal experiments of 2007. We had no idea where we were going and whether anyone would be interested in helping us get there but thankfully there were other parents and families looking to the future with hope, who stood with us.

We spent the first two years getting established with the organisation being run from Rachael Stevenson’s daughter’s bedroom. The first London Gala was a great success quickly followed by two ‘Best New Charity’ awards at the Charity Times and Just Giving award ceremonies.

Progress in Rett research over the past 15 years has been rapid, though never quick enough for parents and their children living with the condition but here we are, still fighting for everyone with Rett syndrome for as long as it takes.

The gene therapy announcements this week have been a welcome boost to morale. Work is going on in labs around the world, every day to produce better, more efficient ways to make our children’s lives better at the same time as these tremendously encouraging updates of the patients leading the way on the current trials.

We have come so far and there is still a ways to go.

None of this could have been possible without our families and supporters. We are a small group within the Rett syndrome community in the UK but we pack a mighty punch.

Thank you to each and every person who has contributed to Reverse Rett over the past 15 years and to those who continue to do what they can to bring about change.
